An Idea To Think About!
"Research emphasizes that coaching is a prerequisite for the implementation of new skills or strategy. (Showers, Joyce & Bennett, 1987)
Dear Ann,
I just returned from a fabulous National Speakers Association conference. The programs were great, yet I felt as if I was drinking from a fire house. You know the feeling - high volume and coming fast!I attended 11 sessions, most of which spawned action steps. But when I returned home, my brain was tired and still in a state of overwhelm.I think that I'm not alone in thinking that integrating and implementing new materials can be challenging.Yet, we know from the statistics that with each day that passes, we lose more and more recall of what we've 'learned'.And we've invested time, energy and possibly money to learn something new. However, the vast majority of us fail to apply even a portion of what we noted we'd take action on.
In this month's newsletter, we'll talk about the 3 R's of Integration and Implementation - otherwise known as "how to avoid drowning when drinking from a fire hose".
The 3 R's of Integration and Implementation
Most of us have attending a workshop or training program, only to return home in a state of overwhelm. Today, we'll talk about how to honor our investment and how we can implement the new information?
Let's look at 3 simple steps, which I call the 3 R's of Integration and Implementation:
RECAP, REINFORCE, RETURN
Before we start, however, I'd like to invite you to take 2 important steps BEFORE you even attend the program.1 - block 2-8 hours on your calendar, IN INK, when you return to debrief and 2 - set 1-2 intentions of what you want to accomplish while there.
Now, let's talk about RECAP:
·Read and review all of your notes, look through the business cards you collected, re-capture any moment from the program worth revisiting.
·Make a list, reviewing it for patterns - which items are TO DO and which are TO BE?
·Prioritize the list, creating an action plan
In the REINFORCE phase, we'll set up processes to help us stay connected with our intentions to integrate and implement:
·Block time on your calendar for the TO DO and TO BE priorities
·Find a buddy or coach to help you with accountability
·Keep your list handy and refer to it often - both as a reminder and to check off completed items
Then lastly, in the RETURN phase, we will calculate the return on investment, physically, intellectually and/or financially:
·Keep track of the dollars that you generate from integrating and implementing your new skills and knowledge
·Acknowledge yourself for each and every positive step that you take and complete
·Review your pre-planning intentions - were they achieved? If not, how could you now?
I hope these tips and tools will improve
your training and development ROI!

Think about this Cause:
A Season for Non-Violence
January 30 - April 4
Every year this cause remembers two great peace-makers: Martin Luther King and Ghandi. For 64 days each year, we are invited to meditate, teach, talk and share our vision for peace.
This note from their website describes their mission:
The Season for Nonviolence is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world.
This is a great way to get involved in stopping violence in the world.
